Report to be delivered to the investigating officer in the CID tomorrow; Nithyananda is accused of sexual assault

Doctors on Monday conducted tests to certify the ”potency” of godman Nithyananda, but have not submitted a report yet on it to the officer investigating the case of alleged sexual assault on a woman devotee in his ashram in 2012. The report is likely to be submitted in 24 hours.

Ordered to undergo the test, which purportedly examines whether a man possess the male organ, its virility and his capability to maintain an erection – considered as prerequisites for the old definition of rape — Nithyananda and his disciples entered the Institute of Nephro Urology at the Victoria Hospital campus at 8 am on Monday.

A team of four doctors are said to have examined Nithyananda, from both Victoria Hospital and Institute of Nephro Urology, headed by Dr Durganna T, medical superintendent of Victoria Hospital.

Nithyananda was at the hospital till about 5 pm. He was then taken to Madiwala Forensic Laboratory for a voice test.

Dr R Keshavamurthy, professor of urology at the institute who was also part of the committee, told Bangalore Mirror: “We did not do a semen analysis because we were not given the orders. It is not necessary that every potency test needs to have a semen analysis done.

We have performed a couple of other confidential tests which cannot be revealed.”

Keshavamurthy said after initial questioning, all the examination was completed by 1.30 pm. ”Nithyananda said that he wanted to rest for a few hours, so we gave him a room. The report is likely to come in 24 hours and the committee will form an opinion and submit it to the investigating officer. After this we will analyse if further tests are required,” he added.

Hospital sources said that Nithyananda did not cooperate with a few tests initially but later had to do so. “Usually a potency test is done at three levels. First there needs to an NPTR (Nocturnal penile tumescence and rigidity) test which is usually done when the person is in deep sleep and his rigidity is recorded between 3.00 am and 5.00 am, since that is the time the erection is said to be the highest. The second is a cue induced visual sexual test where the person is kept in a desired environment and an erection is induced in him either by giving tablets or injection to see if the penal mechanism is normal. Finally a penile Doppler blood flow study is done to check the blood circulation in the semen,” a doctor who did not want to be named said.

If the cue-induced visual sexual test comes positive, it may not be necessary for the person to undergo the night test, as it will prove that he is potent. This is measured at four levels from Grade 1 to Grade 4, and if it falls under Grade 1, it is supposed to be weak and his potency levels are considered low, he added.

A doctor at a private hospital said that he was intimated by the Institute of Nephro Urology staff that Nithyananda would be taken to his hospital for the NTPR, as the Institute did not have the requisite equipment. But the visit was cancelled, the doctor said, indicating that Nithyananda might have refused to undertake the test. CID officials refused to comment on the matter.
